Writing Samples

My various internships and campus roles as a journalist has given me experience writing, reporting and storytelling in many forms. Check out some of my favorite pieces below.

Many of the skills I gain as a journalist are directly transferrable into design.

Research

Journalists must fully understand the topic they are reporting before they can write a piece. Whether it's through multiple interviews, generative research or learning from experts, journalists do everything in their power to learn valuable information.

Designers utilize this skills while trying to understand their user. They utilize research done by UX researchers, interview user for design testing, and conduct background research to fully understand the problems they are designing solutions for.

Crafting a Narrative

Journalists are bombarded with information while interviewing sources, conducting investigative research, sorting through transcripts and uncovering truths as they write a story. A good journalist must prioritize and organize complex information while they write, including what is necessary and presenting it in a digestible way.

Designers use these same skills, with a different final product. They tackle complex problems with no visible solutions find important insights to present a solution to the stakeholders in a comprehensive way.

Empathy

Journalists practice empathy for their subjects every day, connecting to their sources in interviews and truly understanding the context of the topic they are reporting.

UX Researchers and Designers cannot do their jobs efficiently without empathetically understanding their user. One must have a deep understanding of their user's motivations and pain points in order to effectively create solutions.
